My Word Against Theirs (by Yemisi Mafe)

1 Kings 17: 1. And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

This scripture is one I love so much because I see it as a beacon of hope and encouragement. It gives me that get up and go feeling anytime the spirit brings it to me. Talking about words, how do you define this all-important thing we make use of every waking moment?

To the linguist, a word is the unit of language that native speakers can identify; they are the blocks from which sentences are made. To the journalist, it is news: information about recent and important events. The computer scientist sees it as a string of bits stored in computer memory.

As a child of God, I see myself as a princess of the Most High. I believe the words of the Bible is a manifestation of the mind and will of my Father. This is why I do not joke with every word and utterance that comes from me either verbally or otherwise (e.g sms, emails, blogs etc) because I know that the words I speak are not mere sounds.

We live in a world where people have to contend with various issues/challenges. The world throws many things at us which can make this planet a hell of a place. The least we can do as children of God is to determine in our hearts that every one that comes our way will never leave us the same way they came. We can decide to be a burden-sharer; someone whom others can see as a friend indeed.

This will take a process and like every process, it must start with something; the word of your mouth. If the word of your mouth is seasoned with love, people want to share with you their deepest hurts and pains. The bible says we shall decree a thing and it shall be established. What are you saying to the challenges and issues of life you are facing presently? Are you standing up for God against all odds through your utterances? Beloved, when you stand up for God, He would go to any length to make sure the situation does not consume you.

Elijah stood up for God and Jehovah went to the extent of commanding ravens to feed him. Have you ever thought about this scenario? Ravens are large all-black birds mainly scavengers, feeding on maggots and beetles.

They prey on small invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and birds. Ravens may also consume the undigested portions of animal faeces, and human food waste. They store surplus food items, especially those containing fat, and hide such food out of the sight of other Ravens. They also raid the food caches of other species. Sorry to bore you with the traits of ravens but one needs an understanding of the behavioral tendencies of this bird to be able to appreciate the awesomeness of God.

Can you imagine a dirty, black bird that would hide its store of food from other ravens now bringing same to a holy man of God; Elijah? Of all the birds flying in the sky, He chose the one that seems not to fit the bill in human estimation to bring food to His prophet. When you speak the word of God into your situation, circumstance, opposition and challenges; you can rest assured that the God who made this earth His footstool will use the foolishness of man to confound the wise. He would use the stingy, tight-fisted man to embarrass you with blessings. He may choose to bless with twins a
