The Trial Cycle

The Word

Psalm 66:8-12 AMP

8 Bless our God, O peoples, give Him grateful thanks and make the voice of His praise be heard, 9 Who put and kept us among the living, and has not allowed our feet to slip. 10 For You, O God, have proved us; You have tried us as silver is tried, refined, and purified. 11 You brought us into the net (the prison fortress, the dungeon); You laid a heavy burden upon our loins. 12 You caused men to ride over our heads [when we were prostrate]; we went through fire and through water, but You brought us out into a broad, moist place [to abundance and refreshment and the open air]

The Message

We experience tough times in our lives for different reasons.

Sometimes we mess up and have to pay the price for our mistakes. Most people don’t have a problem with this because they hold themselves responsible. All we
need to do in this case is confess our sins and ask God for mercy and grace. Eventually everything will be fine.

Sometimes the enemy just shows up at your doorstep with trouble. He throws something at you. What we need to do here is take authority over all his activities in our lives and he will pack his bags and go.

Sometimes God packages and designs a problem for you, because He wants to work out something in your life. This one is like a viral infection. It must run its course. No amount of binding and loosing will change anything. It is not a function of anything you did or did not do. It is usually an exam before a
promotion. That is the kind of thing the psalmist was talking about in our text today. You never see it coming. You are simply perplexed because it comes out of
the blues, from nowhere. It is the place of testing- very uncomfortable but never destructive.

The best thing about this place is, God is right in it with you. Call it what you like, fire, water, dungeon, prison, wilderness, the impossible place- He is right there with you. You tend to discover things about yourself, about God, about your relationship with Him in this place. It is painful yet you feel the love God has for you so palpably. You get closer to God’s heart in this place. No wonder God sets it all up Himself. One of the translations of the eleventh verse said, ‘ You lured us……’. He has to because even though we know it is all for good, nobody would choose to go there.

Another truth about this type of trial is that every child of God who desires to achieve anything at all for God will experience these trials at different points in their lives. It is the only way to mature into the image of His Son. That transformation process is what we call the trial of our faith. In this trial, you are constantly required to decide if the walk of faith is worth it.

The best part is that the trial process comes with great rewards. Times of refreshing, abundance and victory always come after the trial process. We are assured of that in God’s word. That becomes our source of hope and strength as we go through the trial.

Our greatest challenge as believers is being able to discern the difference in the trials we experience. How do you know when it is the devil fooling around or God putting you through the test? That is where prayer comes in. We engage with the Holy Spirit in prayer and He gives us the understanding we require for the hour. Obedience will eventually bring peace even if the times are tough.

So, are you in the place of trial? Are you overwhelmed? Have you prayed and prayed and nothing is happening? Have you bound and loosed and it looks like the devil is having a filled day? Have men despised you and asked you where your God is? Are you feeling all alone, like no one cares? Have you……..? You can fill in the gaps. Just remember, He has not left you.He is closer than you imagine. Look beyond your experience. Look into your heart, That is where He lives. It is all for good. He is making way for a far better place. That gives you enough reason to hang in there. He loves you so much. Never ever forget that.
