The Wonder of Redemption

Recently I had a situation in my life that brought me to my knees as usual. I began to pray scriptures concerning the situation and was expecting answers from the Lord.  Then the Lord began to show me that all the problems that life brings our way are because of Sin.  He was not saying that I did anything wrong, but the Sin Issue is root of the problems we face.

He took me back to the beginning- Genesis 1: 27, 28 ‘So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them. Then God blessed them and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over…..every living thing that moves on the earth’.  He created man and gave him a mandate to take control here on earth.

God did not just give man a mandate but also gave him a location-the Garden of Eden. Within the garden there were 2 important trees, the tree of life and the tree of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Then He gave man an instruction,  Genesis 2:15-17, ‘Of every tree in the Garden, you may freely eat, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat, for in the day you eat of it you shall surely die’.  He was supposed to tend and keep the Garden but not eat of this particular tree.  God chose His words carefully. It was okay to eat of any other tree (may), including the tree of life, but it was a command (shall) not to eat of the other tree. He made a pronouncement of the consequence of eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, ‘You shall surely die’. The original Hebrew Language says, ‘Dying you shall die’.

I cannot begin to explain how the enemy was able to deceive perfect people who were in the image of God, but he did. Genesis 3: 6 ‘So when the woman saw that was the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her and he ate’. She believed a lie and brought the whole of creation under the pronouncement God had made earlier, ’Dying you shall die’.

The death process began. The deterioration process was put in place. Not just for man but for the whole of creation. Separation from God brought death into the equation. Once a man is born, his body starts to prepare to die. It is this decaying process that makes man susceptible to sickness, poverty, fear, fruitlessness, barrenness and all the evil that the devil can come up with. They are the consequences of the fact that sin came into our world.

At this time I was wondering why the Lord was taking me back to the beginning. I knew the story inside out. I felt that what I needed was to get into the promises of God for my situation and I would be fine. Then He began to break it down for me, to place emphasis on the root of my problem- Sin. Not wrong doing but Sin. When man fell he became separated from God, for which there were consequences. If I wanted solutions to my problems I need to go back to the solution that God provided for the problem of Sin.

I was a bit confused. I thought the promises in the Word were the solutions we needed. But He explained to me that, the solution to all life’s problems is in constantly acknowledging the solution He provided.  John 3:16 ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life’.  As he kept speaking to my heart, I felt, ‘Lord, you’re not saying anything new’. But He wanted me to know, that all the promises in the Bible could only become real to me as long as they are juxtaposed against the solution He had provided- His only begotten Son-Jesus Christ.

In giving us His Son, He restored us to Himself, He arrested the death, decaying process and we are restored into the life giving process by faith. This life giving process which has been restored through faith in Jesus Christ is what guarantees that we get solutions to the problems that life throws at us. The Spirit of God is the life giving Spirit, and once we tap into Him, we can receive life to help us overcome negative situations in life.

I realized that I tend to pray for solutions to my problems by going straight to the promises, rather than acknowledging what Jesus accomplished for me as the basis for asking God to come into my situation. It is on acknowledging the finished work of the cross as the basis for redemption from the consequences of sin, that I can present the promises He made in His word. I tend to put the cart before the horse by presenting the promises. In fact, I tended not to give much thought to the work of the cross. I just felt it was given. I believe that amounts to taking Jesus for granted. I was doing myself great injustice, because I was truncating the life giving flow of the Spirit of God into my life.

Romans 1:16’……. The Gospel of Christ is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes’. The Gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ going through the death process to bring to an end the power of sin over our lives. He came into our world, took the form of sinful man, experienced death for him, so that the power of God could raise Him. It is that same power that is available to us, infuses us with His life to overcome whatever the enemy throws at us.  He brings us salvation, the total restoration of man from sin and all the consequences of the fall.

Why didn’t He draw my attention to my drifting before now? I believe I needed to get my act together to get into the next phase of my life. There is just how far I can get praying the way I have been. I once heard Pastor Sam Adeyemi say that he hears believers praying prayers that amount to simply ventilating emotions. He was encouraging believers to pray confidently, approaching God based on the finished work of the cross which provides us with privileges that are available to us.

I changed my prayer patterns and my prayer experience changed completely. It felt like whenever you refer to the work of salvation wrought by Jesus on the cross, the Spirit of God would suddenly begin to get excited, I would pray and worship for hours on end and not get tired. I would get counsel from the Lord and a clear understanding of His mind for me. I would get confirmations of the things He had said to me in prayer, verbatim. It was a bit uncanny. But I became more confident in my relationship with the Lord and my walk with Him. It completely turned my prayer life around.  I normally pray with music in my ears. One of those days, my music would not play and I was still able to pray exactly the same way despite not having the music. I became bold in walking through my issue. I realized I was being prepared for a next-level walk with God.

As usual I share my experience with you so you can tweak what you need to, so that we can all walk in the fullness of that which God has for us. We are in this together. He is not a respecter of persons and so if He wants me to change things, He probably wants you to also change things. I am excited about 2013. The excitement has not worn off. I believe He has great things in store for us. He has given me the ticket to access what He has for me by helping me tweak my prayer life, by giving me the sense of appreciation I should have for what Jesus did for me on the cross. I properly and adequately esteem it. It makes all the difference.  It does not matter what the devil throws at us-how big, how intimidating, how distressing or discouraging, I have the TOOL to deal with it.  And so do you. CK
