What Do You Hear?

The Word

Numbers 10:1-10

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Make two silver trumpets for yourself; you shall make them of hammered work; you shall use them for calling the congregation and for directing the movement of the camps. When they blow both of them, all the congregation shall gather before you at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.  But if they blow only one, then the leaders, the heads of the divisions of Israel, shall gather to you. When you sound the advance, the camps that lie on the east side shall then begin their journey. When you sound the advance the second time, then the camps that lie on the south side shall begin their journey; they shall sound the call for them to begin their journeys. And when the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but not sound the advance. 8The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and these shall be to you as an ordinance forever throughout your generations. “When you go to war in your land against the enemy who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you will be remembered before the Lord your God, and you will be saved from your enemies.  Also in the day of your gladness, in your appointed feasts, and at the beginning of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be a memorial for you before your God: I am the Lord your God.”

The Messagetrumpet

For the last 25 years I have been to church every Sunday, except I am in unfamiliar territory. With the internet, I really have no excuse not to go. All I need to do is Google and I will find a church to attend. For me, church is not just a ritual. I actually have personal expectations as I go to church. I have all kinds of needs-clarification, healing, issues that need to be resolved, a word of confirmation, wisdom, or understanding. It could be anything.

I can easily testify that I have met with God on several occasions in church. I remember I had a growth on my skin I was uncomfortable about. I could not see it because of where it was but I would reach out and feel it but I did not want it there. I prayed one morning as I left for church and asked the Lord to take the growth away.

As I got to church, my Pastor at the time, made an altar call to people who had growths on their bodies. I went out, he prayed and that was it. It did not disappear immediately but when I reached out to feel it a few weeks later, it was gone. I have several such testimonies.

Last Sunday was one of those Sundays. I needed some clarifications and just wanted the Lord to send me a word. Today’s devotional is my perspective on yesterday’s sermon in church. In today’s text, The Israelites embarked on the journey to the Promised Land under strict instructions from God. They were not in doubt as to what God wanted them to do. There was the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night.

The Lord also gave an instruction to Moses to make a certain clear trumpet sounds for different situations. There was a different sound for gathering the people, another sound for them to move forward or advance, another sound for the time of war, and a sound for celebrations. That is what Paul meant in I Corinthians 14:8 when he said ‘and if the bugler doesn’t sound a clear call, how will the soldiers know they are being called to battle?’ My Pastor explained that the pillar of fire and the cloud are in our hearts now, and even the trumpets all sound in our spirits now.  All the sounds amalgamate into the voice of our great Shepherd. He said we will hear His voice and not strange voices John 10:3-5.

So I began to ask myself, what sound am I hearing in this season? My Pastor, as the prophet of the house said we are to advance, move forward, and do something. If we do not step out of the boat, we can never experience walking on water, if we don’t launch out our nets, we can never get a draught. We must go beyond our comfort zones and then we can experience the miraculous. We know the enemy shows up, but we will cross that bridge when we get there. Just advance. Don’t let fear and timidity become the reason not to make that move.

At the end of the day, to advance would be to do that thing that you understand God to be saying to you. For all of us, the instructions would vary. For different seasons, the instructions would vary. For different situations, they would also vary. The important thing is that we do what we need to do to show God we trust Him. You will know what your instruction is because you are His sheep; you hear only His voice, you go when He calls out to you. Your DNA is not wired to hear any strange voice. You will hear aright and you will obey. You will not cower before your red sea or Goliath. You will advance and the red sea will part. You will advance and you stone will bring down the enemy.

Some of those instructions God gives us can be ridiculous. They are usually supposed to get you out of your comfort zone. The very aggressive go-getter could be asked to stay in the Word and be quiet when all He knows to do is be out in the streets. He could ask you to buy baby things when the doctors have clearly said you don’t stand a chance of getting pregnant. Or He could ask you to buy a wedding dress at fifty. Just advance. Do what you understand Him to be telling you to do and see Him come through for you.

I was so excited at the end of service, I was walking on air. I feel a strong sense of being in the middle of something really massive. I believe I am the first miracle, daily transforming into the image of my saviour, breaking all kinds of silly mindsets that cannot get me into my Promised Land. Letting go of relationships that are not healthy for me and positioning myself in my mind to get to this place where I can fully embrace whatever He wants to do in my life. All I know is that as I have advanced, I am already encountering God. I know my expectations will not be cut short.

We are in a new season, a new day. We should expect the manifestation of God’s goodness in this season. But we must hear something from Him. He always has something to say. We must hear Him so our efforts are targeted and focused. That is the only way we can get results. Knowing what He is saying is crucial to our success. So I ask you again, WHAT DO YOU HEAR? A lot depends on your answer. God bless you.
